A CBT-Based Group Program for Children (Ages 6–10)
INTRODUCTION
Childhood trauma can shape the way children think, feel, and connect with others. Experiences of fear, loss, or neglect may leave children feeling unsafe, withdrawn, or overwhelmed. Yet, children also carry an incredible capacity for healing and resilience when provided with the right environment of safety, trust, and creativity.
This manual has been developed as a practical guide for therapists and facilitators working with children between the ages of 6–10 years. It works together with the children version of my therapy journey booklet. It draws upon the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) model, combined with play and art therapy techniques, to create a group-based healing journey
What You Will Find Inside:
12 Structured Sessions – clear outlines to guide therapy from start to finish.
Therapist Scripts – sample wording to introduce activities in child-friendly ways.
Group Activities – play, art, and storytelling exercises to encourage safe expression.
Therapist Tips – guidance for handling sensitive moments, group dynamics, and adaptations
Guiding Principles:
Safety First – children heal when they feel secure.
Play and Creativity – art, games, and imagination open gentle doors to expression.
CBT Structure – helps children identify feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, while building coping skills.
Relationship and Support – healing happens best in connection with others.
This manual is not a replacement for clinical training or judgment but a supportive tool to help structure trauma-focused group work. Above all, it carries the belief that healing is possible, hope is real, and every child matters.
